Totem Soup Science - Aquaponics Project: Phase 1

Lately I have started focus on my aquarium and projects related to it. I have had the tank for about 4 years now, and up until recently, it was just something I maintained barely. The bare minimum maintenance was not due to lack of passion, but due to lack of money. I am currently gainfully employed (my last job was not so gainful), and have switched to focusing on my hobby and getting my kids into learning about it as well.

Here's a comparison photo of the tank during the dark times and from about a month ago:

And this is the tank now:

I am currently running a canister filter that cycles about 540 gallons per hour on a 55 gallon tank (new as of yesterday). Here she is:

This led me to some thoughts. The canister alone can filter my tank all by itself without the Marineland Emperor 400 bio-wheel style filter seen in the pictures. So, I gutted the Marineland. Bio-wheels, filter medium, motor, and power cable all removed. I routed the outflow of the canister filter into the inflow of the Marineland filter, like so:

The lid is currently on the filter to slow evaporation. Once the growing sponges come in I will be planting bamboo in the filter, so the canister will be pumping water into the "Marineland Planter" and the water will waterfall back into the aquarium.

That's it for now. Stay tuned for project updates!
